Working with artists always leads to the discovery of new images and forms. The alphabet is diverse and flexible, and what is fascinating about these qualities is that—whether used in speech or writing—it always retains them; this is something akin to the experience of immigrants and their languages. Immigration in New York is diverse, and the languages used for communication—English included—become flexible to facilitate that exchange. These are the letterforms representing the countries associated with the sayings selected for the upcoming issue of Sursystem Magazine. As you can see, each one is distinct and unique, just like the people who created and shared them.

supuesto, nuevos sonidos.

Salud!

LOS HEREDEROS RADIO: SOUND MAP OF SALSA MUSIC IN NYC PODCAST, PART #2

Hi Everyone!

Here is the QR code of the second part of the Sound Map of Salsa Music podcast made at LHRadionyc last November 15. I wanted to say thanks to @adrianishungry for the music selection; one of the things that I like most of this lecture is that every time we do it, the music selection is different but came from the same period of time and brings different sounds and messages. Also, many thanks to Mauricio Bayona from @lhradionyc for the invitation, the logistics and the amazing space at the 74th St. and Broadway Subway station.

You can scam the QR code to listen the second part podcast or you can click in the LHRadio picture to go to its webpage to play the second session, also, you can click in the link below the picture too.

I Hope you can enjoy this second episode of the Sound Map of Salsa Music in NYC!

Salsa Sound Map of New York City #2

Inspired by the deep history of salsa in New York City, Sursystem Magazine created a map highlighting the genre’s origins, evolution, and key landmarks across the city. Originally featured as a centerfold in Sursystem Magazine 08, the map is now coming to life on the airwaves in a three-part live radio series, debuting its first episode today. Hosted by Marcelo Arroyave and Adrian Patiño, the series guides listeners through 23 key points on the map, each representing a neighborhood, venue, character, or landmark that shaped the story of salsa in NYC. At each point, listen to a track that not only contextualizes the discussion, but immerses the audience in the soundscape of salsa’s evolution. In today’s episode, learn more about the project and its creators, and begin the tour through New York City salsa.

University Open Air: From Fields to Cities: The Journey of Sayings

This lecture explores the fascinating evolution of popular sayings, tracing their roots in rural communities and examining how they’ve been reshaped in urban environments. We’ll look at how these expressions reflect cultural and social changes as they move from agrarian life into city living.

We’ll begin by discussing the role of oral tradition in preserving cultural wisdom, and how sayings have served as tools for teaching values, caution, and humor. Then, we’ll explore the historical shift during industrialization, when rural populations migrated to cities, bringing their language with them. We’ll see how these sayings adapted to new urban realities and how they continue to bridge generational and cultural divides.

At the end of the lecture, participants will be invited to share rural sayings that are still used today, as well as sayings from their own backgrounds that have had a positive impact on their lives in New York City.

I hope you can join me at this lecture. The people who share their sayings will get the sayings book if their saying is selected to be published.

Happy to invite you to my new project with the Brooklyn Public Library, here is the art and if you are interested in participating you can send me an email with the information I request in the form or you can send it to me in a DM on Instagram, thanks to @bklynlibrary and @bplpresents for supporting the project and I hope you are encouraged to participate!

*Immigrants’ Sayings From NYC*

This project aims to reclaim and preserve the popular wisdom found in the sayings shared by immigrants living in New York City. These sayings are often passed down from parents, family members, and friends, or were learned in their home countries. They play a vital role in maintaining the popular culture of their cities or towns of origin.

These sayings provide immigrants with a comforting and familiar inner voice, offering motivation during challenging and often hostile circumstances. They encourage immigrants to persevere in pursuing their dreams and provide solace and hope during the inevitable difficulties that arise in their journey in a new city.

Agradecimientos al Máster @zecarrillo por los carteles!

Nos vemos!

SURSYSTEM MAGAZINE 3R WORKSHOP AT THE SECRET DOOR TATTOO STUDIO

Last May first, I was invited by @barriocollectivebk to do the Sursystem 3R workshop at @thesecretdoornyc studio. It was beautiful working with the studio crew; it was such a group of talented people who were focused on the work process and made their own magazine without hesitation or complaint.

I want to share pictures of the people who participated in it, plus the fanzine Expo we put together to show the participants the fantastic world of independent publishing.

All of them made a piece of artwork for the magazine content; also, the covers and back covers of the Sursystem 3R were made, decorated, and designed by the people who joined the workshop, too.
