Workshop: Memory Re-Used How to Build a Magazine with Reused Paper Using your Memories

The Brooklyn Public Library (New York City) is hosting the University Open Air Winter Semester from February 24 to March 7th, they invited me to participate for the second time since they started to do the University Open Air (UOA) in 2019. 

On this semester I will do a workshop that I developed since I was living in Colombia, it workshop was named for me Sursystem 3R (Reused, Recycle and Rethink), but for this event, I changed its name, now is called: Memory Re-Used, and the goal is that the participants in the workshop bring their old memories from their life in the neighborhood where they are or were living (old pictures, postcard, letters, posters... etc) and create a new page for the content of the magazine with that memories and, on the same time, they learn how to build a magazine with reused paper and reused shoebox, also, they will make the decoration of the cover and the back cover of the magazine using different techniques.

The workshop will be split into two parts, I will leave below the links to the UOA webpage and the links to my workshop.

Also, there will be more classes and lectures through those two weeks, feel free to explore it and I hope you can participate in this fantastic idea from the Brooklyn Public Library.

THE ONLY ONE MAGAZINE SURSYSTEM 3R FROM 2019

Since I started to live in NYC I was eager to travel to different places around the world where some of my close friends are living a long time ago. One of those friends is living in New Zealand many years ago and I always said to her that after three years in NYC I will go to visit her there, but time was gone and I never got the opportunity to go to NZ to visit my friend.

After six years that I was not meeting with my friend, she called me a few weeks ago and told me that she will come to the US for three weeks and she asked me if I wanted to meet her in Fort Lauderdale and spend some days there with her. It was a surprise to me and I was happy to say yes to her proposition.

It was a very good way to pay to her the promise that I did a long time ago and that I didn't comply.

That meeting was a good excuse to make a Sursystem 3R as a gift for my friend. I made it and I gave it to her this Christmas. It was the only one Magazine Sursystem 3R from 2019 that I made.

THE LAST SURSYSTEM 3R FROM THE STICKERS SERIE IN 2018

After I came back from my quick trip to Colombia, the last December, I got an invitation from my friend Jimena, she was planning a birthday party for her: she was turning 40 years old and she wanted to celebrate it with all her friends. Of course, I thought to give to her a Sursystem 3R as a gift for her ephemerides, but I was a little bit of lack of creativity but I had an idea about what I wanted on that Sursystm 3R magazine that I was doing for Jimena. Due to it, I asked my friend Frahy if she could finish making the cover and the back cover for that magazine following the idea around make it just with stickers, and fortunately, she said yes.

This Sursystem 3R is the number 6 of 6 that were made (the cover and the back cover) just with stickers in 2018. There are 6 copies, I made some of them and others copies were made by Frahy, of course, she has more talent and creativity than me, and I am proud of it and I am very grateful with her for collaborating with this project. Like always the content of the magazine has specials features that make it unique.

We finished the SSyS 3R # 6 just a few days before the Jimena party, and after the party, I gave it to her and I waited in her living room until she opened all the gift bags that her friends gave to her for her birthday… My gift was almost the last one that she open and saw, I hope she liked it.

THE TWO NEW SURSYSTEM 3R THAT I LEFT IN CALI

I went to Cali, the city where I was born to celebrate the holidays with my family after 4 years and 6 months of living in NYC. There I met again many of my friends and one of them, Hermann was in Cali too, he is living in Barcelona and the first time that we met was there, then we became friends; was so nice met Hermann in Cali because when I went to Barcelona in 2017 I didn’t give him the gift that I made for him, but, he told me before I was in Cali that he would be there the same dates than me, then I finished his gift and I gave it to him. Obviously, the gift was a Sursystem 3R, it was the number 5 that I did just with stickers. Also, I left in Cali the Sursystem 3R number 3, but I didn’t reach the person out for who I made that Sursystem. I hope someday I can meet that person in Cali and give her the Sursystem 3R that I made for her.

Since I am living and working in NYC I started to plan my vacations in advance, very Greengo and very responsible. I started to do the same thing with the gifts that I want to give to my friends when I will meet them on my vacations. I did both things this year: I planned my vacations ahead and I made the gift for my friends in advance.

This year I went to Buenos Aires to visit my friend Sara who lives there around 7 years ago, also, I found there Natalia who is my friend from my university in Cali, Colombia, and finally I reached Liber in Montevideo who I knew from Cali and then I met in Barcelona when I lived there in 2008.

I made five new Sursystem 3R (Rethink, Reuse and Recycle) before I went to my vacations in Buenos Aires, one of them I gave to my friend Sara, and then another one who was made for my friend Frahy (she made the cover and the back cover) and I brought it to her friend Juan who lives in Buenos Aires many years ago. I was so happy to see Sara and Juan faces when they were receiving the Sursystem 3R from me, I think it is a good practice because now when the people want to give to someone a gift many of them just buy a gift card and it is showing me a lack of creativity and imagination. I prefer to work with my hands and give my friends something unique and useful.

THE FIRST SURSYSTEM 3R IN 2018

When I started to make the Sursystem Magazine I was to doing a workshop in my original city: Cali, it was a long time ago, when I was in the university and when I believed that I could change the world. The idea of the Sursystem magazine wasn’t just mine, there was another person, my friend from the university Harold, better known in Cali as The Zudakaboy; he was doing a workshop with me about Manu Chao and the world music and in the middle of this job we started to think about a magazine where we could to write about music, globalization and “mestizaje”, then, we started to build, first, the idea about the publication and then, the topics and finally, the magazine title.

CURRENTLY IN CALI, COLOMBIA

We worked together with the magazine for around four years, we made together 3 issues and then, He went apart to start to make his own Magazine that is called Satellite Sursystem. The last number of Satellite Sursystem is about the Salsa Music and its history in Cali, Colombia and the Caribe. My friend Harold sent me it with my sister around 6 months ago, and it is a beautiful publication with very interesting essays, articles, and stories, also, the graphic design that was made by Carlos Carrillo -in my opinion, the best graphic designer in Cali and also in Colombia- is really amazing, beautiful, awesome... I don’t have more words to describe their beauty.

The way that I chose to said thank you to my friend for sending me the last edition of his publication was to making a Magazine Sursystem 3R to him. I sent it to him with my sister when she was back to Colombia around five months ago. I hope Harold will enjoy my magazine that is handmade such as I enjoyed his magazine when I got it. His magazine Sursystem was the first magazine that I made in 2018.

The last week of December my friend invited me to go to her home to pass the new year with her family and friends. It was in Cumming, Georgia, on a typical north America suburb next to the Lanier Lake. I was there for one week and we did a lot of things through these days.

Before I left NY to go there, I started to think was what the best gift for my friends if they have everything that a typical north America family could to buy? Of course I though in make a Sursystem 3R for them like a way to show my love and my care for them, but also, like a way to said to them that outside to there are another different ways to live and the most important thing: different ways to see our world. 

This is the Sursystem 3R Magazine number seven, the last magazine that I made in 2017.

FINALLY, THE SURSYSTEM 3R NUMBER SIX!

On my last post, I said that I did my first six Sursystem 3R, but I only showed 5 of them. The number 6 was difficult to make because that one is for the person who helped me to make the art on the cover and the backcover in two of the first five, and she is an artist plenty of talent and good ideas and it means that I can't make her SSyS_3R in a simple way. The problem is that I am not an artist and I spent a lot of time thinking about how to make that magazine and that the results were good and she would like it. However, here is the SSyS_3R number 6, finally, I hope it will like to her and I wish don't spent a lot of time trying to make the next magazines.

 

The nice thing when you aren't an artist and you start to do this kind of work is that your imagination becomes fastest and new ideas coming to you, it happened with this copy. I added new content from another art magazine into the Sursystem in order to make it more beauty and unique.

The last thing that I want highlight is that all the material that I used to made it, are from the workplace of my friend, from the plastic bag where the Sursystem is in, to the material to make the collage that is on the cover and back cover, until the pages that I put here in this post and that are inside it.

THE FIRST SIX SURSYSTEM 3R

Almost one month ago, I went to visit my friends taking advantage of my vacations. Before started my trip I thought about what kind of gift I needed to buy to gave to my friends, and I didn't found anything nice made in New York City and I didn't to want to buy the regular souvenir from this city, however, the problem to me was to get a good present for my friends which I didn't see between 6 and 4 years ago. I wanted to erase years of ungratefulness Caleña (I don't know if it has some sense in English).

After weeks of search different kind of presents in Hipster stores, regular gift shops and walks on the stupid malls, I decided to make the gifts with my own hands, also, I decided that I don't wanted to spend a single dollar to buy these presents. On that way, I made the six first Sursystem 3R for my friends, totally handmade, with reuse materials and with special features just for them.

I wanted to show it here and say to the people that still visit the Blog that it is my new project called Sursystem 3R (Reuse, Recycle and Rethink), and I wanted to start to make that Fanzine on my own but also in workshops and art classes in the schools and add to it new material about the 3R subjects.

By last, I want to say thanks to Frahy who helped me with the cover and back-cover of two of the six Sursystem 3R; anyone can see the difference between what I made and what she made. Enjoy.
