A MINIATURE BOOKFAIR (ON THE SIDEWALK) BY 2X2 PERIODICAL

On August 7 of 2021, I was heading to Thompkins Part in the LES of Manhattan to participate in the Miniature BookFair organized by 2x2 Periodical. It was a beautiful summer day where I met a bunch of young people who are doing a lot of independent publications in NYC.

I met the guys from 2x2 Periodical in another street fair back in June, near Thompkins Square Park, and they invited me to their Okupa Miniature Bookfair on the sidewalk that day. It was an opportunity to show the Magazin Sursystem to the people and to talk with publishers that are very active in this scene. Also, it was very nice to know 2x2 Periodical and get their publication (@2x2periodical), it is free and came to life once a month.

Also, that day was the 33rd anniversary of the Thompkins Square Park Riot, there were book vendors, punk bands, and much many punk and metal paraphernalia. That day I got the opportunity to buy the graphic novel called War in the Neighborhood that describes the story of that space before, during, and after the riot. I recommend their lecture to everyone who wants to know the history of this part of NYC.

Thank you very much to the 2x2 Periodical for the invitation and here are some pictures from that day.

The 2x2 Periodical set this device up in the sidewalk to distribute their publication, it was made with recycle materials. So nice!!!

Enjoy.

Hi everyone,

2x2 Periodical collective invited Sursystem Collective to A Miniature Book Fair this Saturday, August 8, from 1 PM to 8 PM outside the Tompkins Square Park at Lower East Side, New York. If you are by the neighborhood, came and take a look at the 2x2 periodical publications and the Sursystem Magazine, also, take a walk around this historic place, known for its insurgency against the real state speculation and the police brutality.

THE FIRST SIX SURSYSTEM 3R

Almost one month ago, I went to visit my friends taking advantage of my vacations. Before started my trip I thought about what kind of gift I needed to buy to gave to my friends, and I didn't found anything nice made in New York City and I didn't to want to buy the regular souvenir from this city, however, the problem to me was to get a good present for my friends which I didn't see between 6 and 4 years ago. I wanted to erase years of ungratefulness Caleña (I don't know if it has some sense in English).

After weeks of search different kind of presents in Hipster stores, regular gift shops and walks on the stupid malls, I decided to make the gifts with my own hands, also, I decided that I don't wanted to spend a single dollar to buy these presents. On that way, I made the six first Sursystem 3R for my friends, totally handmade, with reuse materials and with special features just for them.

I wanted to show it here and say to the people that still visit the Blog that it is my new project called Sursystem 3R (Reuse, Recycle and Rethink), and I wanted to start to make that Fanzine on my own but also in workshops and art classes in the schools and add to it new material about the 3R subjects.

By last, I want to say thanks to Frahy who helped me with the cover and back-cover of two of the six Sursystem 3R; anyone can see the difference between what I made and what she made. Enjoy.

FANZINE WORKSHOP IN MS 50, WILLIAMSBURG, BK

In my last job, I did a workshop with the kids from 8th grade in a middle public school in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (MS 50). The workshop was about build a Fanzine with reused and recycle paper, also, the students did one page of the content and they did also the cover and back cover with the technique of collage. I am saying all of these things because after almost three years I restarted my work with the Sursystem 07 content, it means that I drove the workshop in the same way that when I did the Sursystem workshop about Reutilizing and Recycling, and I taught to the students the same thing that I taught to the Sursystem workshop participants when I did it in Cali and Bogotá (Colombia). I wanted to show the workshop process here because for me is very important to start to do the Sursystem 07 workshop again in the US, but, a little bit different; from now, the Sursystem magazine will be called: Sursystem 3R: Rethink, Reuse, Recycle and it will be focus on getting new instructive from different kind of participants like graphic designers, illustrators and artists in order to make stuff with reused and recycle materials, doing on the same time a reflection of the consumer society. The workshop will have the same structure and will be open to everyone. Now, take a look at the workshop process that I did and send me your ideas or concerns if you have one. Enjoy.
