SURSYSTEM MAGAZINE 3R WORKSHOP AT THE SECRET DOOR TATTOO STUDIO

Last May first, I was invited by @barriocollectivebk to do the Sursystem 3R workshop at @thesecretdoornyc studio. It was beautiful working with the studio crew; it was such a group of talented people who were focused on the work process and made their own magazine without hesitation or complaint. 

I want to share pictures of the people who participated in it, plus the fanzine Expo we put together to show the participants the fantastic world of independent publishing.

All of them made a piece of artwork for the magazine content; also, the covers and back covers of the Sursystem 3R were made, decorated, and designed by the people who joined the workshop, too.

Special thanks to @adrianishungry for his work with the Riso print machine, to @loly.roots and @bubalu.electricttt for their support throughout the workshop. Also, many thanks to Holguer from @thesecretdoornyc for hosting the workshop, it is an amazing place full of talent and possibilities. We were 14 people working 5 hours straight, and nobody left the ship. I hope we will do the workshop again soon.

Hello everyone! In the latest edition of Sursystem 08 magazine, we explore the Sound Map of Salsa Music in NYC. In this edition, you'll not only read about the history and changes in Afro-Latino Caribbean music as it evolved into salsa, but you can also listen to the music and appreciate the context through the lyrics. For salsa enthusiasts and those new to this music genre, I'd like to share QR codes for two playlists. The first playlist is curated by @adrianishungry for the 08 edition of SSyS magazine, and the second playlist is created by @DianaSiguaraya for the presentation/launch of Sursystem 08 in Spanish on Friday, February 9, 2024, in Cali, Colombia at the Museo de Arte Moderno la Tertulia. Enjoy it and dance to it!

SOUND MAP OF SALSA MUSIC IN NEW YORK CITY: LECTURE

This Saturday, April 20, I will do the Sound Map of Salsa Music In NYC lecture under the Brooklyn Public Library University Open Air Spring semester. This will be the last opportunity to get the Sursystem 08 Magazine in Spanish for free, also, the lecture will take place on Sunday, April 21 in Spanish and after it, I will do the South Bronx Salsa Tour for those who want to travel with me from the University Open Air location in BK. The music selection for the lecture by Adrian is Hungry.

English lecture. Start time: 2:30pm – 4:00pm
Saturday, 20 April: Sound Map of Salsa Music in NYC, lecture. In English.

In this lecture, you will explore the origins of salsa music in the South Bronx through its sound and its connection to the territory. You will discover the people who created the new genre from the traditional Latin music brought to NYC by the Caribbean immigrants who settled in the Bronx from 1940 to 1980. The participants in the lecture will receive Sursystem Magazine 08, where they can read, listen to music, and follow the tour of the places where salsa was forged on the map. By the end of the lecture, you will have a general idea of how Salsa music emerged and how the Afro-Caribbean immigration added a new musical culture to NYC.

Conferencia: Mapa Sonoro de la Música Salsa en Nueva York. En Español: Sunday, April 21: Conferencia + Tour: Mapa Sonoro de la Música Salsa en Nueva York. En Español. Lecture Time: 1:00PM – 2:30 PM. Tour time: around 1:30 minutes + the commute.

La lectura se realizará en español como un homenaje a todxs lxs inmigrantes afrocaribeñxs que llegaron a Nueva York en los años cuarenta y que, con su cultura y nostalgia por su tierra, crearon la música Salsa. Los participantes en esta conferencia recibirán el magazín Sursystem 08 en español, y con él podrán seguir la historia del origen de la Salsa en algunos barrios de Nueva York y ubicar los lugares más importantes en el mapa, además de escuchar la música que se hacía en esos sitios. Después de la lectura, los participantes están invitadxs al recorrido guiado que se realizará en el sur del Bronx, donde caminaran por las calles y visitarán algunos de los lugares donde nació este ritmo latino que aún hace vibrar y bailar al mundo entero.
